Implants: a tooth of your own instead of a denture
An implant is a titanium root placed into the bone to replace a lost tooth. A crown goes on top. Unlike a bridge, the neighbouring teeth are left untouched. We work with Straumann, Osstem, MegaGen and other international systems.
When implants are needed
One tooth has been lost
An implant does not require grinding down the adjacent teeth, as a bridge does.
Several teeth in a row have been lost
Two implants can carry a bridge of three or four crowns.
All teeth have been lost
All-on-4 or All-on-6 — a fixed prosthesis on four or six implants.
A removable denture will not stay in place
Implants give it support, and the denture stops shifting while you eat and talk.
How it works
X-ray and bone assessment
A CT scan is needed: it shows the height and density of the bone in the implant area.
Plan and choice of system
The doctor selects the implant system and size for your situation and says whether bone grafting is needed.
Placing the implant
Surgery under local anaesthetic. In some cases immediate loading with a temporary crown is possible.
Osseointegration
The implant fuses with the bone — usually a few months. You are at home during this time and we stay in touch.
Prosthetic work
On your second trip we fit the permanent crown onto the integrated implant.
What can get in the way
Not enough bone
Solved with bone grafting or a sinus lift, but this lengthens the treatment and affects the price.
Untreated teeth and gums
Inflammation next to an implant hinders integration. Treatment of those problems comes first.
Smoking
It noticeably worsens integration. The doctor has a duty to warn you about this before surgery.
Uncontrolled general conditions
Diabetes, clotting disorders and a number of other conditions require a report from your own physician.
